Allegations
In February 2025, Adfree Cities and the New Weather Institute filed a complaint against WPP plc at the UK NCP. The complaint concerns the advertising work of WPP for high-emitting clients in the fossil fuels, plastics, aviation, automobile and fossil finance sectors.
The complainants allege that WPP’s advertising work for major polluters such as carmakers, plastics producers, airlines and fossil fuel financiers contributes to the adverse human rights and environmental impacts of climate change by facilitating increased demand for polluting products and undermining global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The complainants further allege that WPP has failed to disclose environmental impact in line with its voluntary commitments and environmental claims and has made inaccurate and misleading statements in its sustainability reporting, including statements that WPP does not take on any client work designed to frustrate the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement.
The complainants are seeking for WPP to adopt due diligence processes to discontinue work that could be in conflict with international climate standards and to disclose the full environmental impact of its work.
