Wellatota Farmers’ Organization vs. Kolon Global Corporation

Allegations

On 23 April 2026, the Wellatota Farmers’ Organization filed a complaint against Kolon Global Corporation at the Korean NCP. The complaint concerns the environmental and livelihood impacts caused by the Nilwala Salinity Barrier, constructed between 2016 and 2022. According to the complainants, the project has significantly affected local farming communities living upstream of the barrier. Key issues raised in the complaint include:

• Increased flood levels and slower drainage in upstream areas
• Loss of agricultural productivity and farmer livelihoods
• Inadequate consultation with communities during the planning and implementation phases of the project
• No transparent or participatory mechanism by the company for managing the barrier operations

The complainants are seeking an independent review of the project, remedial engineering measures to restore proper drainage and river function, compensation for affected farmers and communities, and a transparent and inclusive management framework for the operation of the barrier.
