Allegations
On 21 July 2025, Stichting Wakker Dier filed the first ever animal welfare-focused complaint against Vion Food Group N.V. to the Dutch NCP. The complainant alleges that Vion is violating Chapters II (General Policies), III (Disclosure), and VI (Environment) of the OECD Guidelines by failing to identify, analyse, and address the adverse effects that Vion and its partners’ operations are having on the welfare of pigs in the meat supply chain. They focus on the negative impacts of mixing pigs that are unfamiliar with each other during transport, overcrowded livestock lorries and waiting areas in slaughterhouses, and high concentrations of ammonia in pig pens.
The complainant is seeking an agreement whereby any future negative effects on the welfare of pigs in the meat supply chain can be prevented.
Responsible business standards on animal welfare were incorporated into the OECD Guidelines in the 2023 update of the Guidelines. More information on animal welfare in the Guidelines is available on OECD Watch’s website.
