Allegations

On 25 November 2024, Justice Beyond Borders and Justice for Iran filed a complaint to the Korean NCP against Jino Motors Co., Ltd, a manufacturer and exporter of special-purpose vehicles. They allege the company failed to conduct risk-based due diligence to prevent and mitigate potential human rights violations when selling its products. Specifically, they allege the company’s water cannon vehicles were used by the Iranian government to suppress protests, resulting in human rights violations and misallocation and overuse of water resources. The complainants call on the company to suspend all future sales of water cannon vehicles to Iran.

Outcome

On 25 February 2025, the Korean NCP published its initial assessment rejecting the complaint on the basis that consideration of the issues would not contribute to the purposes and effectiveness of the Guidelines. The company had informed the NCP that following the sale of water cannon vehicles to Iran in 2010, it had not sold any further vehicles and had no plans for future sales.
