Allegations

On 7 April 2025, Migrant Justice filed a complaint against Ahold Delhaize (AD) to the Dutch NCP. The complaint alleges labour rights violations connected to milk sourced by AD’s subsidiary Hannaford, in the northeast of the USA, processed by HP Hood and sourced from cooperatives including Dairy Farmers of America and Agri-Mark. The complainants allege that AD contributes to violations against migrant workers in its supply chain, including inadequate living conditions, and violations of the right to privacy, right to security, right to security of tenure and freedom from retaliation, right to limitation of working hours, freedom from forced labour, right to safe working environment, right to non-discrimination and equal treatment.

The complainants request for the NCP to establish a framework for productive negotiations to ensure cooperation in preventing and remedying human rights abuses and to hold both companies accountable. Among other things, they call on AD to join the Milk with Dignity Program, which is a worker-driven social responsibility program with the goal of improving conditions and protecting rights of workers in the dairy industry, and implement a robust due diligence process.

Outcome

On 16 April 2025, Migrant Justice published information about developments since the filing of the complaint. AD’s USA CEO responded to Migrant Justice’s questions and offered a meeting between the parties, which according to the complainants is the first time in the year-long campaign by Migrant Justice. AD also announced to shareholders and the public that the company would undertake a “Human Rights Impact Assessment” of the Northeast dairy supply chain and invited the participation of Migrant Justice. The assessment will be conducted by an independent organisation, include interviews with dairy workers themselves, and result in recommendations to the company on how best to address rights violations in the supply chain.
