Allegations

On 1 March 2022, Legalità per il clima on behalf of 45 others (17 NGOs, 26 individuals, 1 political party, and 1 movement) filed a specific instance against Cremonini S.p.A. to NCP Italy. The complaint concerns the company’s activities in Italy related to the intensive livestock farming. The complainants allege that the livestock sector contributes to the global climate emergency, especially given the large volumes of methane produced by livestock.

The Complainants request the NCP’s assistance to mediate a pathway for the company to release information on the climate (and environmental) impacts of its activities, to adjust their risk assessment plans, and to work towards a drastic reduction of methane and other greenhouse gases and pollutants.

Outcome

The complainant’s initial complaint cannot be published due to NCP Italy’s confidentiality requirements for complaints.

On 21 February 2025, the Italian NCP published its final statement. Mediation meetings took place online and in-person between November 2023 and September 2024, at which an agreement was reached between the  parties and announced in a joint press release on 2 October 2024. The terms of the agreement are confidential. The press release states (unofficial English translation):

“… the Cremonini Group confirmed its commitment to ensuring that its subsidiary INALCA Spa prepares an Environmental Due Diligence report containing an analysis of methane emissions generated by livestock farming, including information on the methodologies adopted and investments made and planned; carry out research into possible solutions for reducing enteric methane emissions; indicate in its 2023 Sustainability Report the investments made and planned in the areas of Sustainability and Research.

The provisions of the agreement before the PCN will be implemented within one year. In addition, the Parties have undertaken to meet once a year, for two consecutive years, to discuss the disclosure made by INALCA Spa in this area.”

The Italian NCP expressed its satisfaction with the agreement, which it described as representing “not only an important milestone for climate protection, but also a model of cooperation between the private sector and civil society.”
